Types of Leukemia
Leukemia is categorized according to how fast the disease develops, and by the type of blood cell that is affected. Leukemia may be acute or chronic, lymphocytic or myelogenous.
Acute leukemia has abnormal blood cells that are blasts that cannot function normally because they are immature. These blasts multiply quickly, so the disease gets worse faster.
On the other hand, chronic leukemia has blast cells that are mature and can function properly, but are not entirely normal. The cells accumulate because they live longer than usual and cause a build-up of white blood cells. This kind of leukemia worsens gradually.
Lymphocytic leukemia refers to the disease that starts from the lymphocytes in the bone marrow. Myelogenous, or myelocytic leukemia, develops from white blood cells – either granulocyte or monocyte.
